Georgian Rosewood Folding Top Patience Table.
An Exceptional Quality Late 18th Century George III Period Rosewood Patience Table, Or Card Games Table, Having Superbly Figured Two Fold Top With Crossbanded Decoration And Baized Interior, Over Inlaid Stringing To Panelled Front, Back And Sides, Incorporating Baized Storage Slide, Support Lopers And One Frieze Drawer, Raised On Elegant Square Tapered Legs With Original Brass Castors.
The card game of patience was hugely popular during the 18th century and seen as a little light entertainment which was a great way of passing the time. It was indeed so popular that these specific types of small, occasional, lamp type tables with folding tops were christened specifically as “patience tables” made with the intention of one being able to use them as an attractive, elegant little side type table for a large amount of the time, whilst also being able to sit down at them and play cards once the tops are folded over.
This is a great example, of very good quality, constructed from rich rosewood timber which retain an excellent colour and are highly figured. Raised on elegant tapered legs with original castors it also retains its original turned wooden knobs to the single drawer and false drawer which allows the table to look the same from all angles.
As with all items which we offer for sale this elegant little Georgian games table has been attended to in our workshops, by our highly trained, specialist antique furniture restorers to ensure it is in good working order. It has also received a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
