Georgian Mahogany Longcase Clock by John Knight, Riverhead

A finely figured mahogany case standing on a double stepped base with raised moulded panel to the base, long break arch trunk door with brass escutcheon.  Break arch hood with reeded brass inset pillars below the wavy crested top with three brass ball and spire finials.

Arched brass dial with a finely matted centre, silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, moonphase in the arch, subsidiary seconds dial with calendar aperture above the VI and a silvered cartouche signed Jn. Knight, Riverhead.  Original finely cut ‘blued’ steel hands.

Eight day weight driven movement of fine quality with knopped pillars, anchor escapement and striking the hours on a large bell.  Circa 1760.

Watchmakers and clockmakers of the world by Brian Loomes lists John Knight as working in Riverhead, Kent from circa 1760-1770.
