A fine George II mahogany kneehole desk with cabinet-maker or retailer's label for Lowdell, Southwark. The desk's caddy moulded top above a brushing slide and a long drawer; having a central pull-forward door flanked by banks of three graduated drawers and raised on bracket feet. This Georgian kneehole desk is beautifully made from Cuban mahogany with oak drawer linings and retains its original solid backplate handles and a good colour and patination.

Circa 1740

Lowdell is listed in Sir Ambrose Heal's London Furniture Makers (1660-1840) and the desk is disussed in correspondence between Sir Ambrose and R. W. Symonds, the leading furniture historian of the early-mid Twentieth Century.
