An important pair of George IV Cast Shell Dishes, with unusual Turtle bases, made in London in 1822 by Joseph Cradock & William Ker Reid.
The main sections of the dishes are modelled as deep scallop shells and the rims display a beautiful edge decorated with various crisp sea shells. The rear carrying handle displays shell details, scrolls and a beaded top decorated with foliate motifs.
The shells have a silver gilt interior and a matted underside which also displays an oval cartouche engraved with a contemporary Scottish Lion Rampant Crest with the Motto In Hoc Signo Vinces - Under This Sign You Shall Conquer, above. The top section all rests on a beautifully detailed turtle base, with textured shell.
The quality of design and production, is most exceptional and this is the first time we have offered this type of dish before. The work of Cradock and Reid does not survive in great quantity, but is always of the finest quality comparable to pieces from the Storr workshops. They had workshops at 3, Carey Street, Lincolns Inn Fields, when these spectacular pieces were made.
