Exceptionally high quality 18th century mahogany secretaire bookcase with most unusual open-fret architectural pediment above two astragal glazed doors enclosing adjustable shelves, with three small exterior drawers below.. The base with a fully fitted secretaire drawer above three further long drawers, raised on shaped bracket feet.
The glazed doors have the rare feature of a hidden central stile, whereby the right-hand stile of the left-hand door is concealed behind the left-hand stile of the right-hand door. This small detail, whilst needing considerable technical effort to construct, provides a lighter, more balanced appearance to the doors. The three small drawers between the glazed doors and the secretaire drawer are also a rare additional feature.
All in excellent, clean and original condition, and believed to have been in the same family for all of it's life.
230cms tall at the central pediment, 216cms tall at the sides, 73cms working height with the desk lowered.
