George III Ebonised Bracket Clock by Jabez Smith.

George III Brass Mounted Ebonised Bracket Clock by Jabez Smith, London. Circa 1790.

Break arch ebonised case with brass edged single pad top case with brass carrying handle.  Opening glazed front door with canted corners and arched brass fishscale sound frets to the sides.  The rear with an arched glazed door on cavetto moulded shallow skirt base with brass ogee bracket feet.

Painted dial with strike / silent feature in the arch, Roman numerals, original finely pierced ‘blued’ steel hands signed ‘Jabez Smith, Gracechurch Street, London’.  Five pillar, eight day twin Fusee movement of fine quality with shouldered brass plates, anchor escapement and striking the hours and repeating on a centrally mounted silvered bell.  Shaped pendulum rod with pendulum stop. Circa 1790.

‘Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World’ by Brian Loomes lists Jabez Smith as working in London from 1786 to 1795.
