George III Brass Bound Mahogany Wine Carrier.
England, circa 1770.
The body of rectangular form with canted corners and two bands of brass, with original lead lining and four divisions issuing from a central lead post, surmounted by a shaped brass carrying handle.
This is a rare form of portable or table wine cooler; 18th Century bottle carriers generally did not incorporate lead lining, while the traditional cooler would be of larger format with a draining tap on a stand.
