A good George III period silver tea caddy made in 1783 in London by George Smith.
The caddy which still retains its original working lock and key is of serpentine shape with delicate hand engraving.
To the underneath along with the hallmarks is an interesting original memento mori inscription - In Memory of Mrs Dory (Dorothy Dunn).
This caddy would have been purchased with monies left by her and with a portion of that money the beneficiary of her generosity would have bought this tea caddy.
Dorothy Dunn died on 25th of January 1780 in the village of Howden,Yorkshire, England.
Her gravestone is still extant in the impressive village church. An interesting tea caddy in excellent condition.(see pictures)
