Elegant and imposing George II Silver Serving Dish of exceedingly good weight.
United Kingdom. Circa 1729.
This piece is completely plain apart from an extremely generous gadrooned border. The coat of arms are those of Littleton Poyntz Meynell. The reverse of the dish shows a scratch weight of 39.8 ozt but there are no hallmarks whatsoever because the dish was part of a service.
The maker is almost certainly Francis Nelme since the majority of the other pieces in the service were made by him.

This may well have been used as a second course dish but is slightly deeper than the norm and has also got a number of scratches from a carving knife which suggests that it was used for sliced meat with its juices.
This is an outstanding piece of silver and would enhance any dining table.
