George II period mahogany kneehole dressing-table by Elizabeth Bell of London; the oak-lined drawers with moulded edges and their original brass pierced-plate handles; the centre arch-drawer applied with the printed trade-label of ‘Elizabeth Bell & Son, at the White Swan against the South Gate St Paul’s Churchyard...’
Elizabeth Bell took over the business of her husband Henry on his death in 1740 and worked in partnership with their son Philip until 1758, during which period this dressing-table was made. The Bell family regularly labelled their work and a number of pieces survive and are recorded in the Dictionary of Marked London Furniture.
