George II Antique English Silver Salver.

Circular with Bath border, the rim engraved with trellis and strapwork punctuated with alternating baskets of flowers and classical male and female heads. 

The center engraved with a coat of arms within an elaborated shell and strapwork cartouche decorated with classical busts, male term figures, and putti flanked by a shepherd and shepherdess. 

The arms are those of Bosanquet impaling Dunster and Gardiner for Samuel Bosanquet, Sr. (1700-1765) and his wife Mary, daughter and sole heiress of Henry Gardiner, whom he married in 1733.

The Bosanquet family fled to England from France in 1685 following the revocation of the edict of Nantes. The first settler in England, David Bosanquet, became a banker and merchant.

His son Samuel, Sr., owner of this salver, was the esquire of Forest House, and Lord of the Manor of Low Hall in the County of Essex. His son Samuel, Jr., was a merchant and banker who became Director of the Bank of England in 1771, Deputy Governor in 1789, and Governor in 1791

A caster apparently by Augustin Courtauld with the same arms was sold at Sotheby's, NY, Oct. 23, 2014, lot 482. It was incorrectly dated 1783 (perhaps a typo for 1733?).
