England

Circa 1725

The stand probably original although with later added castors.

The outer doors of this charming cabinet depict oriental figures pursuing pastimes by a temple in a wooded and rocky landscape among birds and insects, while one side displays a crane and the other a fantastical chimera. The doors, which are decorated on the inside with flowering foliage and a mythical buffalo, open to reveal 10 drawers of various sizes, decorated with figures, birds and insects among bridges, streams, buildings and rocky landscapes with flowering foliage, all in raised lacquer within powdered gilt borders.

The magnificent engraved central escutcheon and strapwork hinges are typical of the metalwork of this period. The stand is sympathetically decorated with gilt hatching framing bouquets of flowering foliage, powdered gilt and line decorated legs with shaped corner brackets.

An original English cabinet such as this example is an increasingly rare discovery these days and the engaging naivety of its decoration is enormously appealing.
