George I Gesso Mirror by John Belchier.

A George I giltwood and gesso mirror by John Belchier.

An early 18th century giltwood and gesso wall mirror with girandoles.

The swan neck pediment is decorated with egg and dart mouldings and rosettes above punched and carved gesso.

The centralised 'Prince of Wales' plum is crispy carved and surmounts a female bust. The cartouche that splits the swan neck pediment sits above carved ears to the shoulders of the frame.

The re-entrant corners to the top of inner gesso moulding are framing a later 18th century mercury mirror plate. The square corners to the inner gesso moulding, above the later gilt brass girandoles, compliment the lower section of the mirror.

To the lower section the 'S' scrolls and carved relief to the ears are finely worked and flank the candle holders. The shapely apron of the mirror is decorated with foliage and a crisply worked shell adorned with punched gesso and carved gilt.

John Belchier mirrors are present at Erddig Hall near Wrexham in North Wales and a mirror held by the Metropolitan Museum, New York, USA.
