Very pleasing George I Britannia Standard silver tumbler cup of substantial weight and excellent patina.
Maker: John East. London 1720.
One side of the cup is engraved in contemporary script In vino veritas just below the lip.
The full set of very clear hallmarks is stamped on the base of the cup and shows the Lions head erased and the figure of Britannia which replaced the lion passant as the Sterling standard mark in 1696 until 1720. During that period the silver content was 95.8% compared to 92.5%.
Engraved to the side of the hallmarks are the owners contemporary initials R T. This is a lovely piece of old silver.
