French Boulle Tortoiseshell mantel clock in a beautifully decorated ‘Bombe’ shaped case with ormolu mounts surmounted by eight gilded finials.

 

Brass bound side viewing windows, foliate cast mounts, the base edged with a gilt band divided by pendant arch inset with a foliate cast mount to the apron standing on cast toupee feet.

 

Gilded dial mask with segmented blue enamel Roman numerals and original ‘blued’ steel hands.  Raised floral ormolu swag enveloping an enamel cartouche signed ‘Thuret, Paris’.  C.1870

 

 

Thuret is listed in Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the world by Brian Loomes as working in Paris c. 1855-1900.

 

The Thuret family had a long tradition of fine clockmakers working in the city of Paris dating back to 1669.  Isaac Thuret (1669-1700) was clockmaker to Louis XIV and to the Paris observatory.  Members of the same family were still making clocks in Paris until c.1930
