French Empire Patinated Bronze and Ormolu Mantel Clock.

A French Empire mantle clock, elegant patinated bronze vase shaped case standing on a stepped ormolu base with turned feet, four pineapple finials surmounted by an ormolu armillary sphere.

Finely chased bezel with engine turning to the enamel dial with Roman numerals signed ‘Negrier a Gueret’.

Eight day movement with outside countwheel striking and silk suspension. Circa 1815.

(The armillary sphere is the universal scientific instrument for astronomical and nautical measures and was invented by Hippard circa150 BC, through Arab scientists it found it’s way to western Europe. During the sixteenth century it soon became a symbol for astronomy and scientific speculation in the applied arts.)
