Freesprung English Minute Repeating Half Hunter.

Signed: J W Benson - 62 & 64 Ludgate Hill - London - By warrant to HM the late Queen Victoria.
Hallmarked: London 1913.

A fine early 20th Century English freesprung minute repeating lever by Benson in a gold half hunter case.  Gilt half plate keyless movement with raised section of the plate for the going barrel.  Plain cock with diamond endstone, compensation balance employing quarter timing nuts, freesprung blue steel overcoil hairspring.  English table roller lever escapement, screwed in jewelling, escape and lever pivots with endstones.

Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands.  Substantial plain 18 carat half hunter case with blue enamel chapter ring, five joint hinges.  Recessed gold slide in the band.  Gold bow and cuvette, maker’s mark “FT” in an oval above “London”.  Original signed brown morocco covered gilt decorated presentation  case lined with dark blue velvet.

A fine late example of English watchmaking by a prominent maker in excellent overall condition.  Retained in its original presentation case and housed in a case made by celebrated casemaker Fred Thoms, working at 25 Spencer Street, Clerkenwell.
