Fine, mid-19th Century ‘Rio’ rosewood Stick Barometer, in original condition.

The arched top with finely engraved, silvered brass register plates, signed by the maker, and bearing twin rack-and-pinion operated verniers providing a 48 hour record of the weather.

The highly figured and well-patinated trunk concealing original cistern barometer tube which terminates within turned cistern cover.

West was an accomplished optical instrument-maker. Having acquired the renowned business of Dudley Adams in 1826 he established premises in Fleet St. and 41 Strand, working until his retirement in 1849.

The firm prospered under the helm of his son, Francis until 1885 and continued trading until 1952.
