Rare and Delightful Folk Art Pull Toy.
Fashioned as a Uniformed Soldier Riding a Grey Horse.
Hand Carved and Painted Wood, Papier-Mâché and Gesso.
Northern European, circa 1860.
Provenance: The Cosgrove Collection.
The Judkyn/Pratt Collection.
Formerly with Robert Young Antiques.
Literature: Robert Young, "Folk Art"; Mitchell Beazley, 1999; Illustrated and Described Page 116.
Condition:
Rare and extraordinary folk art pull toy fashioned as a uniformed soldier mounted on a dappled grey horse, the wonderfully naïve figure is wearing a tall, plumed hat above a blue uniform with red collar and cuffs and high epaulettes. The horse has a painted mane and natural horsehair tail, that may have been historically replaced and is raised on a simple green painted platform with original wooden wheels. Created from wood and papier-mache, it is in exceptional overall condition and there is some evidence of shrinkage, minor paint losses and retouching. With prestigious provenance to the Judkyn Pratt Collection and the Cosgrove Collection this is a fine example of European Folk Art Sculpture.
