Condition report

A remarkable early Scandinavian Folk Art Iron Bound Marriage Chest with exceptional original iron strap work. The solid oak chest is robustly constructed and retains two generations of painted surface. The original inscription dated "1648" is ghosting through the subsequent generation's inscription, which is in turn dated "1697". The slightly domed top retains the original hand wrought iron hinges and the sides both retain their original heavy carrying handles, together with the decorative wrought iron straps throughout. There is one interior base board that is a later replacement and the back end of the candle till lid has been later shaped to allow for easy closing of the lid, but overall this unusual survivor is in completely untouched original condition, even retaining the original lock and key, as well as much of the historic painted surface. Marriage chests of this style can be traced back to the Vikings and this early example encapsulates the spiting of Scandinavian Folk Art tradition. Now mounted on a contemporary hand wrought iron stand.
