Rare Vernacular Gustavian Housekeeper's Cupboard
With Primitive Faux Bois and Marble Decoration
Pine Retaining Original Painted Surface
Swedish, c.1800
Dimensions
177.5cms high x 112cms wide x 51.5cms deepCondition report
A delightful provincial Gustavian, two part, folk art, housekeepers cupboard with historic painted decoration. The twin fielded panel cupboard doors of the upper part have a replaced wooden pull knob and retain a lovely vigorous original "farmer's marbling" decorated surface within a stylised grain painted field and beneath an architectural cornice moulding. The lower part houses three long drawers and is similarly decorated with the stylised grain painting. The lower part has two restored return waist mouldings and returns to the plinth base, but is otherwise in excellent original condition. The upper part has a patch repair to the back right hand side and a replacement backboard. But overall this rare piece of early paint decorated Swedish vernacular furniture is in a remarkable and original state.Stock number
