An eighteenth century sheet brass travelling lantern with a fan-shaped pediment and repoussé decoration; the three blind sides bearing the arms of Pope Benedict XIV (Pope between 1740-1758).
Whilst the front is now glazed, it would originally have been closed with a thin sheet of cow horn; thin enough still to transmit a candle’s light.
Italian circa 1760.
