About the object
The city of Tabriz in north west Persia has been a major city of fine rug weaving since the 14th century, possibly earlier. Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their excellent weave and remarkable adherence to the traditions of classical Persian rug design.
This attractive Tabriz carpet has an unusual creative design featuring characteristics of much earlier 17th century weavings. Each spacious palmette in the central field is cleverly repeated in a different shape and colours, framed by a generous border. The rare ivory field complements the harmonious vegetable dyed colour combination.
