A fine quality pair of early 19th century mahogany shell-back hall chairs attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London. With exceptionally well carved, deep and crisp shells above 'C' scroll waists and shaped seats. The reeded aprons supported on reeded sabre legs.
Gillows illustrated designs of similar shell-back hall chairs and some are known to have been supplied by him to notable English estates. This current pair illustrate superlative carving, excellent timber and skilled craftsmanship, all synonymous with Gillows.
