Empire Console Tables Stamped Jean Laurent Sottot.
France, circa 1800.
A fine pair of early nineteenth century Empire console tables of faded Honduran mahogany, retaining the original inset mirrored backs, the supporting legs with finely carved Egyptian caryatids to the top, tapering down to delicate feet at the base, both tables retaining the original Sainte-Anne marble tops. With impressed stamp to the frames: JL SOTTOT.
Jean-Laurent Sottot operated a workshop on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, between 1790 and 1799, and is also recorded at 7 rue Saint Sébastien in 1815.
Napoleonic furniture or Empire-style furniture, a term typically applied to architecture, furniture, and other decorative arts that aimed to glorify the First French Empire. The furnishings were grandiose in scale and dotted with Egyptian motifs, particularly the sphinx— elements of the caractère of the owner and his many voyages and exploits.
