Fine circa 1900s Heriz Carpet.

2.96 x 2.24 m.

Early Heriz carpets from Northwest Persia are in a class of their own.  Prized for their geometric designs, fine durable construction and creative use of vegetable-dyed colours, they make ideal long-lasting rugs, and have always stood out for their striking tribal motifs. In our experience, Heriz carpets prove to be among the most versatile decorative weavings, with the ability to unite both modern and traditional design elements in a room.

This example, dating to c. 1900, employs an open, all-over composition, rather than the conventional central medallion, lending the work an expressive, spontaneous quality.  The bold, graphic motifs in its design are worked in tones of cornflower blue and ivory, over a soft tan field, and framed by a wide border - all in organic vegetable dyes, which have taken on a charming patina with age.  The pattern along the border is creatively repeated in a variety of shapes and colours.

Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides - remarkable for a piece of this age.

A wonderful carpet, which would suit a variety of interior styles.
