Fine Chinese turquoise food vessel Kangxi (1662-1722). Of square cross-section with opposing loop handles, raised on four columnar feet. The corners with flanges. Each side incised with a mythical beast amongst scrolling clouds
This food vessel, fangding, is based on an archaic bronze shape from the late Shang/early Western Zhou Dynasty. Historicallly, these vessels were used to make offerings to the gods or ancesters.
