Fine Chinese blue and white kraak plate, Wanli (1573-1619), decorated to the central roundel with a scene of two deer foraging in a lush landscape with pine, ferns and flowering shrubs, the rim with ten panels containing stylised flowerheads, beasts and insects, diameter: 20.6cm. (8 1/8in.), condition: fine haircrack to the rim and some fritting, pierced on the foot rim for hanging.
The deer (lu) is the Daoist emblem of longevity and according to Chinese myth is the only animal able to find and consume the lingzhi, fungus of immortality. Because their name is a homonym with the Chinese word for salary, they can also represent wealth.
