A FINE AND RARE PAIR OF JAPANESE ARITA FIGURES, 1700 - 1730

Of upright stance, haughty mien and stern unwavering gaze, these two superbly modelled male figures, their facial features well delineated with black brows, eyes and hair, red lipped, with  nose and ears well modelled,  each with his right arm behind his back (with a firing hole), the other clasping his cummerbund, their flowing robes, painted in the Imari palette of  iron red, green, pale brown  and black enamels and gilding; richly decorated "V" neck and wide triangular lapels  set off their sturdy shoulders, sandalled feet peep from the folds of their magnificent gowns whose folded pleats moulded, raised and incised, are decorated with scatterings of flowerheads, circles and  leaves all in brilliant enamels on a white ground, the unglazed base with a textile imprint.

Period: Arita, 1700 - 1730
