A fine and rare Charles I Oak Royalist Wainscot Armchair. Gloucestershire. Circa 1635.
The deep scroll carved top rail with a central cartouche above a back panel carved with a central archaded panel with the initial w and dated 1630, above this panel the rail is carved with strapwork and centred by a shield dated 1631. The uprights flanking the panels carved with the tree of life. The downswept arms with scroll ends and chamfered edges above a single piece seat, standing on turned gunbarrel legs united by stretchers. The two dates on this royalist armchair we think signify the births of Charles II 1630 and Mary Henrietta his sister 1631. In original condition except for the loss of both ears to the back outer sides. For a similar chair see Victor Chinnery, the British Tradition. Pg 458. Fig 4:88. Again with the date 1631 and the W, may signify also the Wiggle family as with the example in fig 4:88.
