The BADA Christmas Gift ListAn extremely fine gilt bronze mounted parquetry kidney shaped writing table attributed to Gillows of Lancaster.
English Circa 1865.
The rosewood lozenge trellis inlaid kidney shaped top with finely detailed husks and paterae, banded with exotic woods sits within a looped strap work over a shaped inlaid frieze drawer with gilt knob handle.
The fluted turned baluster supports with leaf-cast headers joined by a banded undertier on toupie feet with gadrooned mounts and Cope and Collinson stamped brass castors.
Of the French Louis XVI design this rare table is signed by the Gillows cabinet maker with his initials “JL” and dated “30th October 65” (1865). Not all Gillows pieces are stamped or signed case, items were thought to be signed when it came to payment so the journeyman / cabinetmaker could prove he was the maker of the item.
The kidney shape has always been extremely rare and sought after design in antique furniture.
