Feuilles de Choux with Stag.

Wool and silk.

Flemish, probably Enghien, circa 1550 – 1570.

Provenance
Private collection, Belgium.

This superb quality tapestry shows in its upper part a field with interlaced 'Feuilles de choux', flowers, fruits and birds. A magnificent stag sits on the lower left side. The division between the upper and lower halves is marked by a river that disappears to the right of the composition.

The central scene is highlighted by a rich border decorated with leaves, flowers, fruits and eight feminine figures. A similar border can be seen on a tapestry from the same period, now in the Musée du Cinquantenaire, Brussels, which tapestry is also attributed to the workshops of Enghien.
