Extremely rare small Chinese famille verte lotus dish, Kangxi (1662-1722), in the form of a lotus blossom, painted in bright enamels, the central roundel with a phoenix and qilin within a peony garden, the radiating petals containing cartouches with further peony, lotus, chrysanthemum, birds and mythical beasts, including a Pixiu, heron and peacock, the reverse with delicate depictions of flowers, including narcissus, lotus, peony, chrysanthemum and prunus.
The Qilin is a fire-breathing horned animal with hooves, the head of a dragon and the tail of a Buddhist lion. It is a good omen, related with the birth of sons and the imminent birth or passing of a great sage. It is frequently depicted with the feng huang (phoenix), another good omen symbolic of good fortune, luck and signal of a virtuous ruler.
