An Extremely Rare English Romanesque Bronze Figure of St John. Circa 1180.

This beautiful 12th century bronze and gilded figure was discovered at Totternhoe castle Bedfordshire. It depicts St John mourning the crucifixion, the young apostle is shown in the traditional pose with his head on his hand, his book supported with a broad swathe of drapery held across his left arm. His hair in soft waves and cut short into a close cap.

Traces of original gilding is present. This extremely rare survivor is now mounted on an acrylic display stand.
