An exceptionally rare George II beer or wine jug made in Newcastle in 1751 by James Kirkup

The Jug stands on a stepped cast and applied circular foot which is decorated with reeding.  The main body is modelled in an unusual tall, slender, baluster form and rises to an everted rim decorated with reeding.

The cast “sparrow beak” spout, displays a protruding girdle and pendant drop below.  This example displays a plain scroll handle with shaped mouldings where it is attached to the main body.

The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial surrounded by a Rococo shell, scroll mantling and foliate spray cartouche.  The Jug is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked in the foot.

It is of a very good gauge and colour.  Considering its size and weight, it has a height of 7.75 inches and the diameter of the foot is 3.75 inches.  With reference to the weight, it weighs a very good 23oz.

James Kirkup was an eminent Newcastle silversmith and was apprentice to the famous quality maker, Eli Bilton I.  He died suddenly in January, 1753 of an Asthma attack at his home.

As you will appreciate, this is a particularly rare example of Newcastle silver.  English Provincial Beer Jugs were not made in great quantities and this is the first time we have seen a Newcastle example.

The design is also most unusual and certainly has a Provincial feel to it.
