An exceptionally fine pair of George III Armorial Snuffer Scissors/Wick Trimmers. Made in London in 1817 by Emes & Barnard

This exceptional piece is profusely decorated in the manner of Paul Storr, with gadrooning, foliate scrolls, shells and a central flower head boss.

This piece has an unusual mechanism as the steel edged cutter automatically rises and cuts as the handles of the scissors are opened and closed.

The side of the box is exceptionally finely engraved with an Armorial, with Coronet of a Baron above and the Motto below engraved on a banner.

The Arms and Motto are flanked by supporters, either side, of military officers on horseback. The Arms are those of Charles William Stewart, 1778-1854, created 1st Baron Stewart of Stewart's Court and Ballylawn and appointed British Ambassador in Vienna in 1814.

The shield of Arms is framed by the motto of the Order of the Bath of which order he was made a Knight in 1813 and a Grand Commander in 1815.

He was subsequently Earl Vane and the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry after the death of his half brother Castelreagh. His seats were SeaHam Hall in Durham, Londonderry House in London and Mount Stewart in Ireland.

The Snuffer Scissors are in excellent condition, with the spring mechanism in perfect order. They are very well marked in no fewer than three separate places.

The quality of these Scissors is outstanding, the finest we have ever offered over all of our dealing years. As you will appreciate, these were originally used for snuffing out candles and trimming the wicks of the candles.
