An exceptionally fine pair of French Second Empire (Napoleon III) Boulle Revival card-tables; the hinged and swivelling tops of elaborate serpentine form, enclosing a shaped baize-lined playing surface within broad ebony borders inlaid with cut-brass. The exteriors richly veneered on all surfaces with panels of engraved cut-brass premiere and contra partie arabesque scrollwork on red-foiled tortoiseshell (turtle) grounds, and further applied with gilt-brass borders, bearded masks and foliate mounts on the boldly-shaped cabriole legs. This fine pair of tables, which would have been described a ‘Buhl’ when made, are classic examples of the mid nineteenth century fascination for the ‘ancien regime’.
