An exceptional mid 18th Century George II carton pierre gilt looking glass of large proportions, in the manner of William and John Linnell.

English Circa 1755-60.

This magnificent and ornate carton pierre gilt mirror designed in the mid-18th century 'Modern' or 'French' style (English Roccoc) is very much after the cabinet-making father and son firm of William and John Linnell of Berkeley Square, London.

The divided arched plate within shaped border glasses, separated and enclosed foliate, scroll-moulded interstices and C-scroll rocaille frames, the elaborated crest with flowering and fruiting finials, the shaped glazed apron with central foliate cartouche. The central glass mercury plate having a soft hand polished beveled edge with a lovely foxed patination, the frame being re-gilt.

A rare large scale mirror standing just over 6 ft of wonderful form.

John Linnell was the son of furniture maker William Linnell, who was one of the first English furniture makers to have studied design at Saint Martins Lane Academy. He worked closely with Robert Adam and rivalled the works of the leading furniture makers of the period, Thomas Chippendale, Mayhew and Ince and John Cobb.
