The Cup stands on a circular spreading foot which is decorated with reeding. The main body has a slightly everted rim and displays a cast and applied beaded girdle around the centre.
The two "S" scroll side handles are decorated with leaf capping and the front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Crest.
The Cup is in excellent condition, is of a very good gauge and colour and displays the original hammer marks on the interior of the bowl. Loving Cups were used for communal toasts, their two handled design allowing for them to be passed around easily.
This is the first time we have seen a beaded example. Matthew West was a prolific important Dublin silversmith who reached the prestigious position of Master of the Goldsmiths Company in 1783-84.
He had workshops in St Werburgh Street, when this cup was made. The size of this example is also most unusual, being smaller than usually seen.
