Staffordshire Pottery Black Small Teapot and Cover.

"Egyptian Black and Black Luster".

Staffordshire.

1820-40.

The black smear-glazed stoneware miniature teapot has molded scallop shells and flowers alternating on the shoulder of the teapot and below the design is reeded.  

The handle with a circle to the top edge and a flaring terminal at the bottom.  The domed cover with similar molded flowers.

Dimensions: 3 1/4 inches high x 6 inches wide x 4 1/4 inches deep.

Pat Halfpenny wrote to me saying, This kind of black pottery was made in Staffordshire from about 1821. Cyples is the best-known maker because they marked more pieces than anyone else. In his recipe book, John Riley says he invented it sometime in 1821 he discusses it under a recipe titled "Egyptian Black and Black Luster". I always remember this because he annotates it "Easy to imitate, but difficult to discover" he gives recipes for the body and for a very thin glaze saying "Old clay works much better than clay newly made, therefore it is always necessary to have a stock of clay made before it is wanted".

The Cyples Pottery was run by Lydia Cyples of Market Street, Lane End, Staffordshire. She ran the Cyples pottery from circa 1812-1834. (See Godden).
