A Delightful Regency Period Gilt Wood Convex Mirror
Of Unusually Small Proportions Having Wonderfully Carved
Eagle Surmount Over Original Mirror Plate Flanked By
Original Candle Arms

(The original purpose of the convex mirror, which of course
were made in a huge variety of shapes and sizes, was two
fold. Firstly they would often make a room look and feel
bigger, the shape of the glass fooling the human eye into
believing there was much more space around the room than
is actually the case and secondly to help illuminate a room
when candles are placed in front of it. The shape of the glass
would in theory help spread the light from the burning candle
in as many different directions as possible. This particular
example is a particularly good one as it appear to have never
been re-gilded which can often really destroy these pieces
taking away the natural ageing process of the gilding, it
retains its original mirror plate, its original candle arms and of
course it is an incredibly unusual small size which we have very
seldom seen before)
