English School - 6th Dragoon Guards, 1840

Oil on canvas. Two troopers and corporal Changing the Guard, in a landscape setting. Contained in a period giltwood frame.

The present vignette may be dated to the second quarter of the ninettenth century. In March 1823 the 6th Dragoon Guards were issued their Grecian helmets with the distinctive bearskin crest.

In 1838 the regiment took part in the ceremonial proceedings for the coronation of the youthful Queen Victoria . At some point between 1844 and 1853, the uniform for the Regiment changed from the traditional scarlet jacket to an Oxford blue jacket and overalls.

Lord Wilson was the son of  Field Marshal Sir Henry Maitland Wilson, 1st Baron Wilson of Libya, G.C.B., G.B.E., D.S.O. (1881–1964), best known as the General Officer Commanding British Troops in Egypt between 1939-1941 and for gaining the first British land successes of the Second World War.

In his role as G.O.C. Egypt he was further responsible for thwarting German attempts to turn the local population against the British, and for giving military advice to a range countries from Abyssinia to the Persian Gulf. In so doing he came to enjoy the confidence of Churchill.
