English Chinoiserie Pearlware Imari Jug of Monumental Scale.

Circa 1820-40.

This impressive Imari-colored jug is adorned with orange and gold lotus flowers, complemented by large blue leaves. The jug features distinct vignettes on either side and below the spout. A similar decorative band is present around the interior of the rim and the exterior of the neck. The handle is a large, shaped blue loop.

The Chinoiserie design, with its blue leaves, appears to be a misinterpretation of the original Chinese design, where flowers are depicted growing from blue rockwork, which is represented here as blue leaves.

Monumental jugs of this nature were often created as presentation pieces.
