English 18th Century Matthew Boulton Venus Vase Ormolu Parfumerie.
England.
Circa 1775.
A White Marble and Ormolu Mounted Venus Vase Perfume Burner by Matthew Boulton.
According to Nicholas Goodison the Venus Vase proved a very popular product mainly used as a model for clocks though some were made as perfume burners.
In a sale at Christies in 1778 there were five Venus vases described as "Venus and Cupid in ormoulu, at the Tomb of Adonis". Only one found a buyer at a price of £13 10s 0d.
Many were exported and in 1772 the Paris marchand-mercier Charles Raymond Grancher advertises for sale a "Venus weeping at the tomb of Adonis on a white marble base".
Coincidently this one was purchased in Paris. Possibly the same.
