Egyptian sandstone fragment of a papyrus flower.

Ptolemaic Period.

Circa 305-30 BC.

A flat backed fragment with three smooth, pointed petals fanning outwards, enveloping the striated leaves of a stylised papyrus flower. A fracture repaired and some encrustation.

Potentially a fragment from a column. Complex column types were popular in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods and fine examples remain, particularly at Edfu and Philae.

Provenance

Private collection, Paris, France; acquired circa 1960.

Literature

Compare J. Baines and J. Malek, Atlas of Ancient Egypt (Oxford, 1980), p. 76.
