Egyptian sandstone fragment of a papyrus flower
Ptolemaic Period
Circa 305-30 BC
A flat backed fragment with three smooth, pointed petals fanning outwards, enveloping the striated leaves of a stylised papyrus flower. A fracture repaired and some encrustation.
Potentially a fragment from a column. Complex column types were popular in the Ptolemaic and Roman periods and fine examples remain, particularly at Edfu and Philae.
