Innovative Pair of Silver Arts and Crafts Shell Butter Dishes.
Maker: Frederick Courthope. London 1901.
The butter dishes have a shell form with wavy edges and a pierced border and the dishes stand on three stylised hoof feet.
The full set of hallmarks and maker's mark are clearly stamped on the reverse of the bowl.
These butter dishes have some height and are therefore conducive to being handed around and feel very comfortable in the hand.
They could equally be used for nuts or sweetmeats.
Frederick Courthope was a master silversmith, who took over the business of the respected George Angell in 1884. he started trading in his own name in 1889. He made and designed a number of interesting Arts and Crafts pieces.
