Eastern Jin c400 AD Yue Yao small Jos Stick / incense stick holder modelled as a Bear. Bears are a rare subject and much sort after.
The light green glaze is lightly crackled and made from a lead oxide.
The modelling is clear and well done and the glaze pools into the hollows or outline of the legs.
The Bear in Chinese folk lore represents strength and bravery and during the Eastern Jin Period the Bear would have been common in China
Excellent piece.
