Splendid pair of very early Victorian sterling silver wine coasters of very good weight.
Makers: John and Joseph Angell. London 1838.
Pair of pierced wine coasters each with a border interspersed by scrolls, shells and flowers. The silver bases of each coaster are engraved with acanthus leaves. In both centres there is a contemporary family crest of a Demi bull rampant emerging from a Ducal coronet. The full set of hallmarks and maker's mark are clearly stamped on the rim of the base.
These wine coasters still have the flamboyance of the George IV Rococo revival style. They are wide enough to accommodate a generous decanter.
