Handsome and unusual early GEORGE III sterling silver ladle with shell bowl.
London 1764.

The very well defined fluted shell bowl is of a generous size while the stem has a thread edge with a contemporary family crest beneath the shell decoration at the top. The finial has an attractive cast double shell with a distinctive overlap ending. All the features on the front of the ladle are very decorative and have been designed with great care. The reverse of the ladle is elegant but less ornate and the full set of hallmarks are clearly stamped at the top of the stem while the makers mark is visible but somewhat rubbed.
The ladle was constructed with two lap-joins which are still visible. One joins the cast ladle to the stem and the other joins the end of the finial with the double shell to the handle.
In spite of the size of the bowl, this is a very well balanced medium sized ladle with a very interesting and rare design.

Length: 8 inches (20.32cm)
