Decorative early GEORGE III circular snuff box with pull off lid applied with Old Sheffield Plate flowers and leaves.
Unmarked. Probably made in Birmingham. Circa 1760s.

The pull-off lid is made of tortoiseshell with entwined Old Sheffield Plate flowers and leaves.
The sides of the lid and the base of the box are applied with Old Sheffield Plate, while the centre of the tortoiseshell base is decorated with a circular feather and floral design.
For similar examples see Crosskey. G., Old Sheffield Plate, Treffry Publishing 2011, page 205.

Due to new regulations for tortoiseshell, should this box leave the European Union, it would require a CITES permit which can be readily obtained. Please contact us for details.

Condition report

Very good. Some wear to the OSP on the rim and base but this is quite light and hardly noticeable and is commensurate with age.
